Drew Barrymore and Michelle Pfeiffer discuss their influence on each other’s movies, tying links between Scream, What Lies Beneath and Scarface.
Drew Barrymore and Michelle Pfeiffer have reacted to the influence that each of them have had on the other’s career. Pfeiffer has enjoyed a long-standing career in film, making a name for herself in the early ’80s with the lead role in Grease 2. Since then, Pfeiffer has gone on to play a wide array of memorable roles and is currently filming the third installment of Marvel’s Ant-Man saga, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, in which she is returning as Janet van Dyne/Wasp.
Meanwhile, it doesn’t appear that Barrymore will be seen acting in anything anytime soon, with the actress earlier this year stating that she is taking a hiatus from acting in order to focus on her family life. Although she will not be appearing in Scream 5, Barrymore did recently help to promote the upcoming feature, as she played along with a call from Ghostface in a TikTok video. While she won’t be seen on the big screen for a long while, the world will not be bereft of Barrymore, as she can always be seen being herself on her eponymous chat show on CBS.
Pfeiffer was recently a guest on Barrymore’s The Drew Barrymore Show, where the pair discussed their filmographies and found a coincidental running link between a number of their films. During the interview, Barrymore introduces the theme by asking whether there was truth to the rumor that Pfeiffer had taken inspiration from Barrymore’s portrayal of Casey Becker in Scream for her role as Claire in Robert Zemeckis’ chilling 2000 horror, What Lies Beneath. Pfeiffer confirmed the question with glee, going into detail about why she thought of Barrymore’s performance for the What Lies Beneath role. Read Pfeiffer’s response below:
Here was a woman who was being stalked in her home – terrified. And I was prepping for it, around the same time that I saw you in that film, and your terror was so… it was so real. It was so real. And I thought, “Oh! That’s it!”
Barrymore then reflects and enhances Pfeiffer’s excitement as she reveals that the wig she wore as Casey was, in fact, originally influenced by Pfeiffer in Brian De Palma’s 1984 crime epic, Scarface. Both actors react to each other’s news with giddy delight as Barrymore kicks her feet on the floor and Pfeiffer’s eyes widen in genuine shock. While showing a side by side comparison of the two role, Barrymore states, “That was what I took to the wigmaker. I said can you make me Michelle Pfeiffer in Scarface. You were my inspiration! That’s why I tripped out so hard!“
Barrymore and Pfeiffer have a clear chemistry and affinity for each other. Perhaps, if and when Barrymore decides to return to the acting world, there could be a future project between the two. If it was anything as entertaining as watching the two iconic actresses chat, then it would be very interesting.
