Every Upcoming Star Wars Video Game Confirmed

Star Wars is prolific in the video game industry and has released over 150 games since 1982, with more to come. Here are the upcoming Star Wars games.

Star Wars is more than a titanic film franchise, as it also has a storied history in the video game industry. Some of the most recent Star Wars games have included Star Wars: Squadrons, Star Wars: Tales From the Galaxy’s Edge, Star Wars: Battlefront 2, and Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order. These titles, and other Star Wars games, are often noted for their quality and popularity, keeping fans looking forward to upcoming titles. So, what upcoming Star Wars games (besides the inevitable Fallen Order 2) are coming out and have been officially confirmed so far?

The first Star Wars video game, an adaptation of The Empire Strikes Back, was released in 1982 by Intellivision for the Atari 2600. Since then, over 150 Star Wars games have come out, spanning from film and TV adaptations to original narratives in the universe, across all genres of games. In 2013, EA signed a 10-year deal with Disney granting the game studio exclusive publishing rights to all upcoming Star Wars games on interactive platforms, though Disney retained the rights to develop casual Star Wars games for mobile devices.

With the EA deal coming to a close and Lucasfilm Games making a resurgence, there is theoretically no limit to the number of new Star Wars games coming out in the near future. EA, while lacking exclusive rights, can still make Star Wars games; in fact, it’s assumed the company will make a sequel to Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order and develop Star Wars: Battlefront 3, though no such official announcement has been made. However, Jedi Fallen Order 2 has essentially been confirmed by EA earlier this year, and it makes sense, given how the first game was a critical and commercial success. There’s also speculation about a Star Wars: Mandalorian game, inspired by the Disney+ show of the same name, as well as an adaptation of the Star Wars: The High Republic book series. Fortunately for fans, amid these rumors, there are several upcoming Star Wars games confirmed to be in development already.

Upcoming Star Wars Video Games: What New Star Wars Games Are Coming Out

Currently, this means the list of upcoming Star Wars games includes:

  • Ubisoft Massive’s open-world Star Wars game (TBD)
  • Star Wars Hunters (2021)
  • LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga (2022)
  • KOTOR Remake (TBD)
  • Jedi Fallen Order 2 (TBD)

In January, Ubisoft and Lucasfilm Games announced an untitled open-world Star Wars game was in development. Ubisoft’s studio Massive Entertainment is helming the project, and since it’s in the early stages, not much is yet known about the game at this point. Massive Entertainment’s creative director Julian Gerighty has confirmed it will be a story-driven experience and will be built using Ubisoft’s Snowdrop engine. It’s not clear when Ubisoft’s Star Wars game will launch, but given the time needed to make a game of this caliber, coupled with the two years remaining on EA’s exclusivity contract, it’s unlikely a release will happen before 2023.

Star Wars: Hunters is an upcoming combat game from Zynga. Players must squad up to fight in an arena-style battle, though it’s unclear if the multiplayer option is PvP, PvE or both. The game will feature several battle stages inspired by iconic Star Wars locations, and playable characters include bounty hunters, stormtroopers, rebel fighters, and more. Though there isn’t a specific release date, Star Wars: Hunters is expected to launch later in 2021 and will be free to download and play on the Nintendo Switch, Google Play, and the App Store.

Perhaps one of the biggest surprises from the PlayStation Showcase 2021 was the reveal of a Knights of the Old Republic Remake. For now, KOTOR – Remake is a timed PS5 exclusive but it will likely appear on other platforms after its initial release. Only a teaser was shown during the PlayStation Showcase, and it’s likely in the earliest development stages. Because of this, KOTOR – Remake probably won’t release until late 2022 at the earliest, and it may be 2023 or later before this new Star Wars game comes out.

LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga will allow fans to play through the LEGO version of all nine Star Wars movies. However, it doesn’t strictly follow the film narratives as prior LEGO Star Wars titles have done, allowing players to customize their experience by choosing to be a Jedi, Sith, bounty hunter, or droid. Though the Star Wars website doesn’t list an official launch date, the game has been subject to several delays and is now expected in 2022.
