Kit Harington Compares Starring in Game Of Thrones vs The MCU

Kit Harington compares his breakout role as Jon Snow in Game of Thrones to his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut as Dane Whitman in Eternals.

Kit Harington compares starring in Game of Thrones to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Though Harington will be joining the MCU as Dane Whitman in Eternals, he is currently better known as Jon Snow, the bastard son of Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark who goes on to the join the Night’s Watch and is eventually crowned King of the North later in the series. After airing its final episode in 2019, HBO’s adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s popular fantasy novels regularly ranks among the greatest series of all time despite its controversial ending.

Part of Game of Thrones‘ success can be attributed to Harington’s portrayal of Jon Snow, which earned him two Primetime Emmy nominations. Since the series ended, Harington has been on the hunt for his next career-defining role, and he may have found it in Chloé Zhao’s entry into the MCU releasing on November 5. While Eternals mostly focuses on its titular superhero team, Harrington’s Dane Whitman is a human who works at the Natural History Museum in London and is romantically involved with an Eternal named Sersi (Gemma Chan). Coincidentally, Sersi is also in love with Ikaris, an Eternal played by Harington’s former co-star on Game of Thrones, Richard Madden.

In a recent interview with Variety, Kit Harington talked about how Game of Thrones, possibly the biggest show of all time in terms production value, helped him prepare him for the MCU, the biggest film franchise in terms of net gross. The two are “different beasts,”- Harrington says, especially since he got to flex his comedic muscles a bit on Eternals. Read what he had to say below:

Nothing really, majorly surprises me after going through those eight seasons of Thrones. It was as big as anything gets by the end, as far as scale goes. But moving into Marvel, it is a different beast, in more subtle ways than you’d imagine. What I like about the differences for me about these two things is I get to have lightness of touch in this, which I think is really important. It’s what I really loved about the Marvel movies — those little moments of kind of lightness, comedy, in amongst everything. And I saw a few opportunities for that with this character. Having played a majorly central part of a different show who was not comedic or light in any way whatsoever, not being the center of attention in this show and playing something that’s a little lighter was kind of fun.

Kit Harington Game of Thrones Marvel Secrets

Harington was a completely unknown actor when he was cast as the bastard boy Jon Snow in the HBO show, and even he likely could not have imagined the massive phenomenon it would become. Games of Thrones was many things, but it wasn’t comedic or light very often, with Harington’s character having an especially rough go at it amid the frigid temperatures at the Wall and later having to go through hell to take back his home Winterfell and defend it from a horde of White Walkers.

Harington would be hard-pressed to find a better crash course than Game of Thrones to prepare him for the scale of the MCU. The HBO show focused on many characters across its vast world, but Jon Snow very much became a focus during the later seasons. In Eternals, Harington had to blend in amongst an impressive ensemble that also includes Angelia Jolie and Salma Hayek. The wait for his MCU debut is almost over as Eternals releases in theaters on November 5.
